The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has announced that it will develop the SORA procedures and has officially released an appropriate update this week. Previously, only the attendees of the EUROPEAN DRONE FORUM got an exclusive sneak peak of the new SORA 2.5, since Natale Di Rubbo (Drone Project Manager at EASA) has exclusively presented the main details at the important conference in Cologne, Germany.
Operators need an operating approval following IR (EU) 2019/947, issued by the competent authority, to fly unmanned aerial systems (UAS) under the rules of the specific category. The approval process includes the Specific Operational Risk Assessment (SORA) to qualify the risk of the operator's proposed operation. Based on the drone type and performance, as well as the planned operation, the SORA requires the operator to take measures to reduce the risk to an acceptable level. To retrieve the data so far, qualitative factors were used to assess air and ground risk. Quantitative factors will be used in the future to provide even more accurate results. EASA will hold a workshop on 09 and 10 February 2023 for operators to learn more about the new assessment.
The slides of the presentation are available. Please register for the EUROPEAN DRONE FORUM newsletter to get access to the slides. Once the registration is confirmed, you will receive an email with the slides.
