The Specific Operational Risk Assessment (SORA) is a tool to help standardize unmanned aircraft systems operations inside and beyond Europe. With wise foresight, a SORA update based on users’ experiences has been scheduled at an early stage. The latest global update, developed to improve the ease and effectiveness of using the risk assessment methodology, is serialized into two steps: SORA 2.5 and SORA 3.0.

With the release of SORA 2.5 by the Joint Authorities on Rulemaking for Unmanned Systems (JARUS official ) in June 2024, harmonization between member states will be favored over local interpretations. This is key for the industry’s development in Europe. However, significant rulemaking challenges regarding autonomy, multiple simultaneous operations, and air risk still hinder some use cases from happening or scaling up at the moment.

Nathanel Apter, CEO and Founder of UASolutions, a Hashtagdrone regulation and certification consultancy, and Joerg Dittrich, leader of the JARUS workgroup „Safety and Risk Management“, will discuss the current state of the SORA guidelines and if version 2.5 is more an important or inconvenient stopover. The townhall debate „SORA 2.5: On the way to version 3.0 – Milestone or never-ending story for Europe?“ at the EUROPEAN DRONE FORUM in Düsseldorf will be hosted by Julie Garland, President of Joint European Drone Associations (JEDA).
